The name of the dance “Bandari” means “of the port” and is a derivation of the Persian word bandar, meaning port. The name of the dance is geographically connected to its origin - the capital of Hormozgan, Banda Abbas ("Port of Abbas").
Iran's multi-ethnic society features many different genres of dance that vary depending on the area, culture, and language of the local people. The region Hormozgan next to the Persian Gulf has been influenced by the African and Arabic immigrants, their music and dance.
The Bandari dance is often played during celebrations such as weddings. It is often danced as a chain dance that may involve multiple people dancing in a row one behind the other, traveling around in a circle and sometimes stepping into the centre for a solo with encouragement from other dancers. The dance is practiced both by women and men, separately from each other. The dance is characterizes by movements of the hips and shoulders involving the torso and arms layering over earthy steps and tribal formations. The distinct feature of this dance is the way performers wave their hands in a unique manner that resembles the cooperation of a group of fishermen at the sea.
Music
The Bandar dance is a combination of rhythmic movements according to the beat of the song. The music can be played in fast and slow tempos. It includes vocals and instruments. The major musical instruments used in Bandari include the Nei ansan (a bagpipe instrument made of goat's skin) or a flute, the tombak (a percussion instrument made of animal skin and the wood of the walnut tree), the day (a percussion instrument made of animal skin and a wooden frame like the head of a drum, with jingles on the rim, similar to the tambourine) and the darbuka (a percussion instrument made of fish skin and clay).

How to dance the dance
The Bandari dance consist of a movement pattern which contains an overall structure. The movement pattern can be varied and combined in different ways and is regionally and individually highly varied. The arms are bent in a 90 degree angle although the angle may vary. The handpalms are facing downwards. The shoulders are shaken forwards and backwards in an isolated manner. The hips are shaken to the right diagonally backwards, then to the left diagonally backwards. These two movements patterns may be performed isolated from each other. The shaking of the shoulders may be performed at uttermost high speed. At other times the two movements patterns may be performed simultaneously. The dance may be performed on the spot or slowly moving through space with earthy steps or in tribal formations such as moving in a circle as a group.
